Learn what you can do to make Berks County greener and healthier through simple, everyday choices.
Planting
trees, shrubs and native wildflowers is one of the easiest ways to
become greener and offset your carbon footprint. Your carbon
footprint is a measure of the impact our activities have on the
environment, and in particular climate change. It relates to the
amount of greenhouse gases produced in our day-to-day lives for
electricity, heating and transportation etc. The more resources and
energy you use, the bigger your carbon footprint.
Trees and plant life absorb carbon dioxide to
produce oxygen, improve air quality, conserve water, and provide
habitat for wildlife, therefore, reducing our carbon footprint.
The
Berks Conservancy is committed to planting wildflowers and trees in
Berks County. All wildflower seeds will be spread along streams and
nature preserves. All trees will be planted in Berks County; in our
towns, parks and schoolyards, and along streams where they will
attract birds, improve air & water quality, reduce soil erosion, add
beauty to our surroundings, and contribute to our quality of life.
Due to the nature of this work, we don’t mark trees or designate
specific trees in dedication.
$10.00 – Spread native wildflower seeds to improve water
quality and provide habitat for wildlife.
$15.00 – Plant a 4-6 foot native tree. Trees are planted in Berks
County woodlands and nature preserves; alongside our highways,
rivers and farmland. Trees are also planted in school grounds
helping to educate and raise awareness among students.
$25.00 – Create a 5’x5’ wildlife habitat with shrubs, trees and
wildflowers.
In 2009, the Berks Conservancy planted 1,542 trees and 425 pounds of wildflower seeds in Berks County!
